An article published earlier this month on the website of the European Heart Journal claimed that European guidelines on the use of β blockers in surgery patients are flawed because two of the trials underpinning them were led by a researcher who was fired for misconduct in 2011. As a result, 800,000 people may have died, according to the paper, which was removed from the journal’s website less than 48 hours after publication.
